Long Ride Home

"One day I took your tiny hand
Put your finger in the wedding band
Your daddy gave a piece of land
We laid ourselves the best of plans
Forty years go by with someone laying in your bed
Forty years of things you say you wish you'd never said
How hard would it have been to say some kinder words instead
I wonder as I stare up at the sky turning red"

(From "Long Ride Home" by Patty Griffin..Please go listen - its beautiful)

I have been listening to this song over and over the past two days and I just cannot get enough of it! I love Patty Griffin and this is definitely one of my favorites of her songs. I found it a while ago but it wasn't until yesterday when I really listened to the lyrics and heard this part of the song. "How hard would it have been to say some kinder words instead.." At the end of the day - how hard would it really have been to say a few more kind words to those who we love the most? Do we want to be 40 years down the road, missing a loved one who has passed on, and wish that we would have been nicer to them? A quote I heard over the weekend from conference that I really liked- "True love requires actions." Its not enough for us only to feel love or to say it once in a while.. We need to be more proactive about showing that love. Just something to think about.. I know it's something I can work on a little harder.
